TN native. A very common, large hickory that was present in much of the original forest of the eastern U.S. Its nut seems to have a pig’s snout shape at the bottom, and is not sweet to eat. The leaves are typical hickory shaped compound leaf with 5 or 7 leaflets. The wood is tough, strong, heavy and not decay resistant outside on the ground.
